A Word From the Author

Here's a note from the author of Year of the Dragon, Tara Fox Hall
When writing Year of the Demon, I knew that new characters would have to be introduced to help the romantic leads Debbie and Jett (human host)/Shaker (demon) to expand their world, as well as a new threat for them to clash with. Initially, I added several more demons, a handful of humans, and even a formidable faerie sorceress to up the action/conflict ante. But as I wrote, something key felt missing; there was love and passion, but little heart and empathy. Being the animal lover that I am, I decided it was time that Debbie embraced the love of pets by getting a dog. But how to add an animal (and its realistically often messy needs) into Debbie’s world of chrome and glass when her biggest love was her film company Pandora Productions? Debbie had no experience with pets of any kind. She would never think to get a pet herself. Even if someone suggested it, she would respond that she didn’t have the extra time to care for an animal, which would be correct. She would have to understand that her dog was worth making time in her busy schedule for. So the dog would have to be a gift from someone for a compelling reason that she agreed with, and to fit within the story, the animal would have to be something more than a mortal dog.
Enter Guardian, the hellhound.
In celebration of Debbie’s pregnancy following her marriage to Shaker, Shaker’s brother Titus gifts Debbie a black lean mastiff with a beaten metal collar to be her guardian and protector. Able to come out of any nearby shadow at Debbie’s call, Guardian appears and intercedes several times to protect Debbie, holding everything from a murderous priest to a vengeful ghost at bay. Guardian also can nod to show he understands her words, though he cannot talk. But like a real dog, he requires food and water, even if he never has need of a walk.
In time, Debbie begins to rely on Guardian as more than a protector, and he becomes her confidante and companion that she lets sleep on her bed every night, especially after her miscarriage. He opens the way for other relationships and balance to come into her life, helping her to realize that while her career is fulfilling and worth sacrificing for, work is not the sum total of her life. She’s achieved acclaim and fortune with Pandora Productions, but there’s a world outside her computer screen that she’s missed out on, until now. Debbie finds not only the need to change her life priorities, but also the desire to want more out of life for herself.

Excerpt

“I’m hoping to build a family, one of my own,” Debbie said without thinking, then flushed, knowing Shaker had heard her. “This has all been a lot to deal with. I’m not planning on making any big decisions about my life this year, other than to get married. And I do have my own company to run, that I’ve put my heart and soul into.” The latter literally.
The buzzing feeling suddenly increased. Debbie struggled to her feet.
“What’s the matter?” Father John said, his brows knitting.
“I tell you, there’s something here!” came an insistent voice. “I can feel it.” Another young pastor came into view, agitated.
A large man was following him. This tall man stopped still, then swiveled his head to stare right at Debbie. “I feel it too.”
He knows. Somehow, he knows. Shaker!
There was no response.
“Go in the back, I’ll check the front.”
The young pastor hurried back in the direction he’d come. The tall man headed right for Debbie.
Shaker! Debbie headed for the door, making excuses to Father John of forgetting the plane was leaving early, anything to get to the door. But the tall man was faster and blocked her path.
Father John nodded. “I’ll hope to see you soon, Debbie, but not too soon. You take care of yourself, and please let me know if you change your mind. Bless you.” He turned and headed away. Debbie thought to call him back, but she knew it wouldn’t be any use. He might care about me, but he’s not going to save me from a demon hunter.
“Hello,” the tall man said. “Your name is Debbie?”
“You already know that,” Debbie said defensively. “Did you send those priests away?”
“Pastors,” the man corrected. “And yes. One is a kindly old man who just wants to help people. The other can feel the demon bound to you and would kill you where you stand, if I hadn’t shielded you.”
“Why would you do that? Who are you?”
“I’m an angel, of course.”

Jenny leaned over the kitchen island to get a look at the trout. “Well now, that looks delicious. I don’t suppose you have any wine to go with it?”
“All civilized men have wine to go with fish. What sort of wine would you like, lass?”
She stopped chopping and gave him a pointed look. “Jenny,” she said, and smiled sweetly. “My name is Jenny. I know you know that, but I am reminding you in case it slipped your mind now that we’re hanging out.”
“Now that we’re…? We’re no’ hanging out,” Edan said instantly, quite sure he’d never uttered those words in his life, and quite sure this was not that.
“Yes we are,” she said with great assurance. “A man doesn’t offer to take a woman to town and then invite her in for dinner if they aren’t hanging out.”
He gaped at her. “How have you managed to finagle your way into a ride and invite yourself in for dinner and somehow convince yourself it was the other way around?”
“Well, whatever you want to call it, we keep ending up together--”
“We donna end up together. You keep appearing,” he said, gesturing in the direction of the terrace.
“Yes, and you keep calling me lass. Not that I’m opposed to that,” she said. “I actually like the way it sounds. Lass. I get a shivery feeling when you say it. It’s kind of a turn-on.”
Edan raised his brows. What the hell was she talking about now?
“Hey,” she said, gesturing with her knife, “don’t you think it’s interesting, all the little things that are a turn-on to people? Like your accent, or the way you call me lass. Hands are a turn-on, too,” she said, and held up her hand.
Edan looked at his.
“See?” she said, wiggling her fingers at him. “Hands.”
“Who are you?”
“I told you. Jenny. Don’t forget it.” She winked.
“I think there is verra little chance I shall ever forget it,” he said in all sincerity.
Jenny laughed, and her eyes had a mischievous little shine to them. He put the trout down. “All right, then. What sort of wine would you like, Jenny?” he asked, articulating her name.
Her lips curved into a pert grin. “White, please, Edan. Is it all right if I call you Edan? I know I have and I didn’t ask you before, but you said most people call you Mr. Mackenzie, which, let’s be honest, does not feel right, especially since, you know, we have this thing going.” She gestured between them with a knife. “We’re like, two peas in a pod.”
“We’re no’,” he countered.
“But we are! We’re both sort of drifting.”

She lifted her bare foot. He held her ankle with more delicacy than she’d expected from such a big man. As he slid the flat back onto her foot, his thumb grazed the indent near her anklebone. She shivered at the sensation. This close, the ocean blue of his eyes shone with intensity as he watched her. What did he look like beneath the costume and makeup? She’d noticed his sexy, crooked smile and the roguish way the corner of his mouth lifted up, as if he knew something she didn’t. His fingers wrapped around the back of her ankle, then stopped. She met his hungry eyes and nudged her leg forward into his hand. His fingers slid up an inch further, moving in a slow, barely there caress.
“I realize it’s none of my business,” he said. “But earlier, out in the ballroom…I don’t know what your friends said or did to make you upset, but if I can help at all, I’d like to.”
“I’m okay. Just shaking something off.” She took a sip from the wine bottle as she watched him. She moved her foot closer to his chest urging his hand closer to her calf. His long fingers stroked her flesh.
She closed her eyes. “Mmm, that feels nice. Don’t worry about what they said. You got a name, pirate?”
“Jack.”
His tone was serious. She looked back down at him and smirked. Two could play that game.
“Oh, of course. You’re Captain Jack, and I’m Little Red Riding Hood. C’mere.” He stood and met her eye to eye. At five feet nine, she often had a vantage point in height in the workplace, which served her well when she wanted to be intimidating, but he had well over four inches on her, easy. His big, muscular frame towered over her. She took another sip of wine and walked her fingers up the buttons of his waistcoat. “Can I level with you, Captain Jack?”
“Yes.”
She pushed aside the question of why she felt so at ease with him when all she’d wanted was to be alone and smoothed her palm over his white pirate shirt, his strong pectoral muscles firm beneath her fingers. When she next spoke, her voice broke as she remembered why she’d sought solace in the first place; she’d gotten a man and his whole family deported.
“See, I’ve had a hell of a hard year. I’ve pushed myself and made magic happen in ways I didn’t think I’d ever be able to, but that magic comes at a price, and I’m not okay with it. Every single day, people want a piece of me. And on normal days, I can handle it. But right now, all I want to do, since you’re here,” she moved closer, her lips inches from his, “and I’m here, is to forget it all and make some magic of our own I can hold onto, even if it’s just this little moment.”
His chest rose and fell as he scanned her. Clarity and kindness were evident in his eyes beneath the desire, and she knew she could have a little fun with him. She noticed that his palms clenched the more she rubbed against him. She smirked, grabbed the lapels of his waistcoat, and crashed her lips onto his.
THE WOMAN WAS unreal. Her thick, pouty lips moved against his, and no sooner had she kissed him full on the mouth than he seized her around her wasp-sized waist and laid claim. She was the sexiest woman he’d ever seen, and her curves were soft and perfect in his hands. His tongue sought entrance to her mouth, and she met him eagerly. She tasted like strawberries and wine, and he groaned as his fingers slipped into her curls. It had been forever since he’d kissed a woman. She scored full check marks in every category, and then some.
Chances were she merely wanted a nice make-out session, but his body already demanded more. He wrapped his arms around her, spanned his hand against her back, and traveled down to the curve of her delectable ass. She shivered against him; the movement went straight to his hardened cock. He nipped her lower lip as he squeezed her bottom.
“Oh, you are one big firecracker, aren’t you? Tell me your name.”
She wrapped her ankle around the back of his calf as she hauled him in close. “No names,” she breathed.
He kissed her and moaned when she rubbed her core against him through their clothes. All right, he’d play along. For now. But he would take the lead.

I take five calming breaths and begin to move my shaky legs towards the front door. Shivers run up and down my spine. I'm covered in goose bumps. I can't believe I am actually doing this. It's surreal. A million thoughts run through my mind, and by the time I get to the door, I realize I have no idea what I am going to say to her. I don't think, 'Hi, I'm the daughter you abandoned almost twenty five years ago' is a great opener.
I stand in front of my mom's house for a couple minutes, just trying to collect my thoughts and process through my head that I am actually standing in front of my mom's house. I decide it's like pulling off a band aid and I just need to knock on the door. Before my mind convinces me to chicken out, I lift my fist and knock on the door.
When I hear movement coming from inside the house, I'm tempted to turn around and book it. I keep my feet firmly planted on the ground, as I keep reminding myself that I can do this. A few seconds later the door opens, and I am almost certain my heart stops for a good couple of beats.
The woman who opens the door is of average height, with a petite waist. She is extremely beautiful. She has the same porcelain doll skin as I do, but unlike me she has shoulder length, straight blonde hair. She has a small nose, with big blue eyes that are darker in colour than mine. Her lips are full, and she is wearing a cream cashmere sweater with dark blue denim jeans. She has a few soft wrinkles on the corners of her eyes, but opposed from that she looks almost too young to be my mom.
"Meredith Holmes?" I ask.
She gives me a puzzled look, letting me know that she has no idea who I am. My stomach drops shortly, but I regain myself, as she answers. "That's me. How can I help you?"

“Let me.” His hand covered hers, and he took the box from her before she could say anything. She pulled her hand back from the touch, which shot fire through her. There was no way in hell she was going to let herself feel that, so she fisted her hand and forced a smile to her face.
“You know what? I can carry my own boxes.” She forced the words out and took in the moment he registered what she’d said. He actually handed her back the box and stepped away, lifting his hands in the air. Of course, now she felt like a first-class bitch, but boundaries were imperative, and the last thing she ever planned on happening was getting sucked into another pair of dreamy eyes, a killer smile, and a rugged body she could stare at all day. No way. Been there, done that.
“After you...” he started just as the voices behind them grew louder. Her mom was walking up the sidewalk carrying nothing other than her handbag, whereas her dad was carrying two big suitcases. Her mom went on and on about something she didn’t have a clue about.
“Mom, Dad, this is Gabriel,” she called out as she stepped into the house and glanced at the clean floors and her shoes. “Is it okay if we leave our shoes on?” she said as her dad nodded and her mom shook Gabriel’s hand.
“Oh, so nice to meet you,” Chloe said. “Gabriel, is it? Tell me, what is your family name? Who are your people, and where are you from?”
Elizabeth took in what she could only assume was a thrown expression on Gabriel’s face. Yup, that was exactly what her mom was famous for.
He darted a glance back to her and shrugged. “Ah...don’t worry about your shoes.”
She kept walking, hearing him say something to her mom, who she knew would be dogging him with questions, a lot of questions. Then she’d report back to Elizabeth and everyone else exactly what she’d learned.

It took a second for Julie to unlock her muscles. Everyone with ears knew Colin Parker.
