Riley gazed at the clock next to her bed for the tenth time in the past twenty minutes. She was mentally exhausted, yet her mind refused to shut down and let her rest. She closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep.
Crreeeak…
She sat up ramrod straight and listened in the darkness. She strained to hear any other sound out of place.
The crickets and frogs chirruped. Off in the distance a red fox cried out—exactly like a woman screaming. Then a scraping sound…so close.
The crickets and frogs abruptly stopped.
She held her breath, one, two, three, heartbeats.
The chirruping returned.
Slipping both legs out from under her covers, she placed her feet on the floor as soundlessly as possible. Slowly shifting her weight, she stood up and tiptoed to the door. She crept out of her room and headed for the stairs where she stopped and listened.
It was a moonless night, and she couldn’t see more than a few feet, but growing up in this house she felt comfortable moving in the near blinding darkness.
She moved onto the first stair and stopped. Making sure of her footing she skipped the next stair knowing it would squeak and gracefully landed on the one below. All the while keeping her hands away from the shaky banister that her dad had promised to fix years ago. She continued down the remining stairs, stepping only on the solid treads. She moved toward the front door. The security system wasn’t active. Had she set it before bed? She couldn’t remember. Cracking the door open she slipped out into the night.
Out of nowhere, a massive hand covered her mouth and an arm wrapped around her waist. She tried to scream, but the man yanked her back and knocked the wind from her lungs.

Grant the mystery man—a delicious mystery Shayla would like to unravel, piece by piece, layer by layer. Ah, but I can’t. I’m his boss. In a different lifetime, if we didn’t have the whole boss-employee obstacle going on…. No harm in looking, though, just a little, since he sat so close. She promised herself to keep her thoughts G-rated—okay, maybe PG-13. Grant had a talent with numbers and paid attention to detail. Also, he was a little shy and standoffish to a lot of people when it came to anything other than work. Shayla wondered where he sometimes went in his head, because, every now and then, his smile slipped from his face, just for a second, before being replaced with one a little harder. None of my business, she reminded herself.
She had really wanted to hug him this morning after seeing him so frustrated but decided it might be wiser and more appropriate to show him there were a few people on his side. Seeing him break things and try to be all strong and humorous about it made Shayla want to unravel the Grant mystery even more. It kind of hurt to watch him pretending to be fine, but all she could offer him was lunch and good conversation. Hopefully, Mr. Strong and Silent—Sydney called him that sometimes, although never to his face—knew Shayla and Sydney cared. And Shayla did care. Because he’s a friend. Just a friend.
Grant raised his soda in a toast. “To things not being worse,” he announced with a rueful half smile. “And, uh”—he cleared his throat—“to good company.” He nodded at Sydney, and when he met Shayla’s gaze, he held it. In his dark eyes, she saw hunger, wide-open desire, and about a million other things she couldn’t puzzle out. Grant looked at her that way sometimes, and she did her best to ignore it. He might have a small crush on her, or he could have a thing for petite, small-breasted girls possessing a great fashion sense.
Sydney broke the silence. “To good food and even better friends.” She clinked Grant’s glass, and Shayla came back to reality and smiled, pretending she wasn’t experiencing several different kinds of inappropriate thoughts and feelings for a sexy, complicated man who was her employee and also her friend. She needed to behave and remember things could never go any further than a panty-melting gaze.

Bennu: You might have heard of the carbon-rich asteroid named Bennu which NASA is taking samples from using the spacecraft named OSIRIS-Rex spacecraft to learn about the origins of life on Earth. The asteroid is named after the Egyptian flamingo deity, the original version of the Greek Phoenix bird of rebirth into eternal life.

Dec didn’t know what he would do, how he’d react if she said no. Thank God he didn’t have to find out because, with a look of relief, she followed him to the elevator without a word. He couldn’t recall a time when he’d wanted a woman more, not even in his horny college days when women were all he’d thought about. It’s just pent up frustration from pent up lust he told himself as they exited the elevator and he led her into the first room on the right. From the way his cock pressed with painful insistence against his zipper, he felt as if he could explode any second. He knew he would’ve had no qualms about hauling her outside and taking her against the brick side of the warehouse if he had found all the second floor, private rooms taken when he’d stopped on this floor on his way downstairs earlier.
“Strip,” he ordered without preamble, tightening his jaw against the surge of possessive pleasure he experienced eyeing the cuffs he had left on her wrists and ankles. They were wide, thick and bulky. He wanted her to know she had them on, know who put them there and accept what they meant as long as she wore them. Her hands shook as she finished unbuttoning her top, her expressive eyes shifting away from his when she shrugged it and her bra off her shoulders. Holding out his hand, he took them, saying, “Now the skirt.”
Camille kept quiet, afraid if she said anything it would be the wrong thing and he’d send her away. With her palms sliding flat against her waist, she lowered the skirt, taking her panties the rest of the way down with it, conscious of the heavy feel of the cuffs. They were bulky and cumbersome around her wrists and ankles, but strangely comforting in a weird, somewhat sexual way. She assumed he would remove them when he finished with her, and she’d been both relieved and pleased he wasn’t ready to end the night just yet.
