New Release: Ravenous Innocence by Myra Danvers

Ravenous Innocence Tour Graphic
Ravenous Innocence
Series: The Last Tritan Book 1
Genre: Adult Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Science Fiction, Fantasy
Publication Date: February 1, 2019
His people took everything from me, and Goddess be damned if I won't take it back.
“I’ll be good to you,” he purred and swept his thumb over my pendant, caressing. His ki surged into my mind, hammering at me with a soothing promise, abusing the link he’d left behind with a kiss. “You’ll never want for anything…”
Asher promises to teach me the forbidden while my city—my home—burns at his back. Because of him, Tritan falls, and the Caledonian forces take the best of my people for their own sick uses.
To fight, those of us who remain must flee. Regroup, or submit.
But he’s coming, hunting me, and Asher won’t stop until I wear his mark. Until my goddess-given power is his to command.
He’s tasted my lips and fed me nothing but lies, but his betrayal has given me strength even he didn’t expect.
His people took everything from me, and Goddess be damned if I won’t take it back.

Excerpt

A low groan rumbled in his throat, and he swallowed, catching my wrist in a much larger hand. For a long moment, he simply stared down at me, but when my tongue darted out to wet lips dried by searing winds of ki and living shadows, something in him snapped. I felt it happen. Even before he pressed his lips to mine, I felt it.
Warm and soft, his kiss spoke of the forbidden. The impossible. Making my core clench with unnatural speed and fervor as ki whirled between us. Sending blood surging in delicate tissue. All around us. Invisible to the hoards of sightless mundane going about their business a scant few feet away, where only their shades could see us. The scrape of a day-old beard dragged a splintered groan from my chest, and, hands slipping down my back, he seized the taut globes of my bottom. Spreading me.
Pulling me closer.
Would that he could drag me inside his skin, where I could drink him dry and soothe this blessed, painful ache.
His teeth traced my lower lip, filling my lungs with breath and heated ki, pressing a thick bulge against my belly.
I gasped, drinking him in, demanding more. Gorging until my every cell was filled to bursting. Drawing on him as heavily as I drew upon his lips. Needing it. More. There would never be enough.
A puff of breath warmed my cheek when he twisted, breaking away from my lips with a curse, his fingers bunching the fabric of my shift. Inching it indecently high. But he drew back, setting his forehead against mine. Petting my hair back with calloused hands. Obsidian eyes concealed behind scrunched eyelids, labored breath leaving my skin damp. “God, the taste of you, girl.” He released my bottom and cupped the back of my neck, forcing me to still. “What are you?”
“I’m—” my voice cracked, and I cleared my throat, blinking as the world settled around us. Dazed, I squinted up at the man, admiring the rugged, handsome features so different to my own. Alien. Bronzed skin, muscular frame, dark hair and darker eyes—everything I wasn’t.
A Caledonian.
Kissing a Caledonian Elite in public? Had I lost my damned mind? My father would…
Nothing.
My father wasn’t here. And I hadn’t had enough. Not now. Not ever.
I buried my fist in his hair, pulling him back. Driven by instinct I didn’t recognize as my own. By a needy itch below the skin, the likes of which I’d never felt before. Before him..."

About Myra Danvers

Raised by her awesome parents in Canada's snowy north, Myra learned perseverance from an early age. She learned to speak in third person, via extensive reading as a child, because... well... Northern Canada gets a LOT of snow. And when one isn't snowboarding, building quinzees, or waking up to teddy bears frozen to the floor, one tends to read about places that are warm--even if being cold is preferable to being hot, every-damn-time.
All that reading gave Myra the gypsy bug. So, after college, (where she majored in professional gypsying) she moved to a ski resort in British Colombia to be a ski bum and chase the winter, because the cold was in her bones and it never bothered her anyway. (Points because Elsa of Frozen is her spirit animal?)
But then life caught up with her, as it does, and now she's stuffed full of enough life experience to write until transcendence (where she will be first in line to get a sweet android body and travel the universe until the end of time). So that's what she does, when she's not listening to the voices or taking apart the electronics just to see their insides.

Excerpt

“Bud says to take her to the conference room,” Luccinni said. He hung up the phone. “He said to make sure she isn’t wearing a wire, and tie her up. He’ll be here as soon as he concludes his business downstairs with the A-Rab. It’ll take thirty to forty minutes.”
“Cal, you go in the conference room first,” said Luccinni, who seemed to be in charge. “Make sure you can see her at all times, and have your gun on her. You’ve seen her perform. You know how quick and strong she is. Colleen, you walk very slowly into the room. I’ll be right behind you, and I won’t hesitate to shoot. In fact, any sudden moves at all, and both of us will let you have it.”
When the three of them were in the conference room, Luccinni said, “Now take off your clothes. Move slowly.”
“Is this how you get your kicks?” Olivia asked as she started disrobing. She acted reluctant, but was relieved at the turn of events. Naked, she might be able to change before she got shot. It was extremely unlikely that any of the bullets were silver-plated. She knew she had to make her move before they could tie her up.
“This just makes it easy to see if you’re wearing a wire, babe,” Luccinni said, “but I got to admit, seeing you with no clothes is a bonus. Slide the duds over to Cal. He’ll check to make sure there’s no concealed wire.”
After examining Olivia’s clothes, Stevens said, “No wire here.” He looked her up and down and added, “Man, I wouldn’t mind getting a piece of that.”
“How about it, bitch?” Luccinni said. “You do us on the conference table, and we’ll try to convince the boss not to have you whacked after he’s done questioning you.”
“Sure, boys, sure,” Olivia said, even though she knew he was lying. “We can all be friends here. I’ll climb up on the table.”
“Move slow!” Luccinni commanded.
Olivia got on the table and lay on her back with her knees up and spread wide apart. The two men looked at each other, silently deciding the order in which they’d service her. Luccinni was the winner. He handed his gun to Stevens, unzipped himself revealing a full erection, and climbed on the table. He touched her nipples and genitals, and Olivia allowed herself to shiver. Luccinni grinned and prepared to mount her. As soon as he was poised over her body ready to begin penetration, Olivia changed. Luccinni jerked upward as he suddenly found himself looking into the snarling face of a leopard instead of an attractive woman. That was the final moment of his life. The leopard grasped his throat in her jaws and ripped. Blood spurted and Luccinni was dead.
Stevens stared in disbelief, momentarily unable to move. Then he opened fire, emptying his gun at the leopard, knocking her to the side, but unable to kill her. Stevens started for the door. The leopard leaped on Stevens’s back. She clamped her jaws on the back of his neck and crushed his spinal cord.
The leopard changed, and Olivia found herself on the floor on her hands and knees, breathing hard, feeling sore where the bullets had bounced off the leopard’s body. After about thirty seconds, she stood up and went over to Stevens. He was paralyzed from the neck down, but still alive. She found a couple of spare magazines on his body, loaded his gun, used one bullet to finish him off, and started down the stairs, not bothering to put on clothes.

“That’ll just give them one more hostage,” Kardmelli protested.
“I can be very persuasive,” Olivia said with a feral grin.
Kardmelli stepped back and shivered. The hairs on his arms and legs stood straight up. The pulse on his neck was beating a mile a minute. Nickford was standing hunched over with his eyes wide open and his lower jaw hanging down.
I scared the crap out of both of them, Olivia thought. Nickford looks as if he’s about to pee his pants.
Kardmelli started to speak, but then had to clear his throat. “We’ll do whatever you want,” he said.
“You are ready to do what we asked?” an accented voice asked when Kardmelli buzzed the galley with the intercom.
“We have a woman who wants to speak with you.”
“You know what we want. We will not talk to anyone else, especially a woman!”
“Please just let her in to talk to you. She won’t be armed. What can another five minutes matter?”
There was a brief pause, and the voice said, “She wants to come in here? We will allow that, but five minutes is all she will get until time starts again.”
“You must assure me you’ll allow her to leave if you cannot come to an agreement,” Kardmelli said in mild attempt to remove suspicion of a trap.
“Of course, of course,” the voice said. Olivia knew he was lying. He wouldn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get one more hostage.
***
Olivia entered the galley, now very crowded with eight people in it. The door was slammed shut behind her by a man holding a gun. The captain was lying on the floor, clearly dead, with his throat slashed. So much for their promise to release him. Two of the attendants were crying, being watched over by a second man, standing to the side, wielding a knife. The third attendant, more defiant, was being held by a third terrorist who had one arm wrapped around her body and a knife to her neck. He relaxed slightly when he saw how small the new hostage was.
Olivia quickly assessed the situation, and decided she could probably handle it without changing and all the crap that would ensue if a leopard were to suddenly appear, apparently out of nowhere. She took two steps toward the man holding the attendant. He looked her over. An evil grin came to his face.
Moving so fast she was a blur, Olivia grasped the arm holding the knife, twisting it and breaking the wrist, grabbed the knife as it fell, and plunged it into the man’s heart. She shoved the body toward the man with the gun, and leaped toward the third man, who was too stunned to react immediately. She took hold of his head using both hands and twisted violently, snapping his spinal column. She caught his knife before it hit the floor and threw it at the terrorist with the gun, now entangled with his dead companion.
He ducked away from the flying knife. That gave Olivia time to move forward, grab his gun, and yank it out of his hand, dislocating his elbow in the process. He screamed in pain. Before he could react in any other way, she broke both of his clavicles with a two-handed karate chop, keeping him alive for questioning, but rendering him helpless.
“Holy Mary Mother of God,” one of the attendants murmured. Her eyes were opened wide. Her pupils were dilated. She was taking deep breaths and her hands were shaking. Beads of sweat were on her face, even though the room was cool. “Who are you?” she croaked.
“Secret Service,” Olivia replied as she opened the galley door.

Series: Gideon and the Crimson Samurai Book 1

Publication Date: December 1, 2014
A timeless tale about friendship, family and betrayal
Gideon Joust is your average twelve-year-old boy, with all the growing insecurities one would expect, following the mysterious disappearance of his father. Character Interview

Get to know Gideon more with this character interview! Read on.
  1. Please tell us something about yourself and your family.
Ok… uh… my name is Gideon Joust and I was born in a city called Shen. I am an only child and I was raised by both parents… for the most part. Growing up, I couldn’t make friends, so I used to play a lot with my father.
  2. We heard your father disappeared mysteriously. How old were you then? How did that affect you?
Yeah, my father disappeared three years ago – which would have made me about eight years old. As he left, he said nothing to my mother and I. Kinda sucks, right? Naturally, I was sad and upset for a long time. However, my mother had a really hard time dealing with it. She got sick from the heartache and passed away, three years after he left. When I lost her, my sadness turned to anger, toward my father.
  3. Did you ever go to search for him? Who helped you?
Well, I kinda didn’t have a choice. Coincidently, shortly after my mother passed away, I was kidnapped by a pair of scary soldiers. They spouted stuff about my father and an item. Fortunately, I was saved by Kibishi; a boy who goes by the title of: Crimson Samurai. He too was looking for my father and since then, we decided to travel together.
  4. What was your life like before you met the Crimson Samurai? How different was it from after you met him?
Oh haha… like night and day. Before I met Kibishi, I was living in a large home, in the safety of Shen which has almost zero crime rate. However, despite this, I was dying inside… at least when my father left. I spent most days, going through the motions of school and running home to take care of my sickly mother. Life since meeting Kibishi was far different, in contrast. Days with Kibishi were spent fearing for my life – running into a bounty hunter or demon beast. At the same time, it was exciting. I felt alive.
  5. What did you think of the Crimson Samurai?
Well, when I first encountered Kibishi, I thought he was a: Rude, arrogant, cold blooded killer. However, after some time being around him, I still feel the same. Although now I consider him my best friend. Talking was never Kibishi’s strong point. He’d always prefer a battle or duel. I never understood such a barbaric mind – however, who am I to complain? After all, he has saved my life countless times.
  6. If you can turn back time, what is one thing you wish you could redo?
Hmmm, it would be nice to redo my childhood with my parents again. I miss the times when my father and I would go out to play, before coming home to my mother’s good cooking. She made the best macaroni and cheese by the way. Laughing and talking together, as the sun went down is a memory I’ll never forget and would love to experience… just once more.

Book Review: Cinderella by Mike Klaassen

Cinderella

Author: Mike Klaassen
Genre: Fairy Tale, Fantasy
On Cinderella’s eighteenth birthday, the king announces a series of three grand balls in which Prince Willem will select a bride. Cinderella attends the first ball but flees when she realizes that she is a witch. Accused by her stepmother of being a dreaded temptress, Cinderella flees the second ball. Determined to gain Willem’s love, Cinderella attends the third ball only to flee again when she foresees imminent invasion by barbarians. Is the kingdom doomed, or can Cinderella use her newfound powers to save the day? Cinderella is part of the Klaassen’s Classic Tales collection of ancient stories first published in the early 1800s, now enhanced for the 21st century. If you liked Hansel and Gretel and The Frog Prince, you’ll love this novella. Rediscover the enchantment of Cinderella today!

Review

An Interesting Retelling
Rating: 5 Stars
I'm sure everyone is familiar with this classic fairy tale. So my recommendation to you all: read this version anyway!
Cinderella as retold by Mike Klaassen is awesome. Fairy tales, as we know, are told in a simplistic manner as they are meant to be short and also meant to appeal to children. On this particular retelling however, the author has enhanced the story further, giving it more life and depth to the storyline, providing a perspective of its own, and presenting characters with believable motivations. Needless to say, this "made-for-grownups" version is much more interesting and though we probably could guess what the ending will be, it still made for an enjoyable read.
The other point of interest for me is on Cinderella's character. As you can surmise from the blurb, this is another non-conforming element and twist to the story-line, that Cinderella is a....witch! How could this be? And how will this affect the interaction points with the other characters in the story? That alone makes this book a must read! There were other interesting add-ons as well that as I recall, were not really present in the traditional fairy tale -- a reference to Cinderella's mom, the hazel tree and the gifts it bestowed, and more. All in all, I think these help to patch and provide plausible explanations for Cinderella's character and behavior.
And so I encourage every book lover to pick up this version of Cinderella. You won't regret it. Certainly a refreshing take to a fairy tale that we've all come to know since young.

Book Review: The Frog Prince by Mike Klaassen

Book Info

Genre: Fairy Tales, Fantasy
A CLASSIC TALE AS NEVER BEFORE TOLD
Long ago in magical realm, seventeen-year-old Prince Gerit reneges on a promise and is turned into a frog. He struggles to adapt to living in a frog’s body, feeding himself, and avoiding predators, and then he sets off to find a princess who can undo the spell. Gerit finds Princess Anneliese, but she refuses to kiss him. In a stalemate that forces them to spend time together, Anneliese and Gerit learn to enjoy each other’s company. When Anneliese is faced with marrying a man she does not love, Gerit persuades her to kiss him and turn him back into a prince.

My Review

One of the Best I've Read!!!

In the category of fairy tale retellings, this has got to be one of the best, if not the best, that I have read so far! A delightful tale that will give readers a realistic -- albeit without regard to the inclusion of magic that is necessary and pivotal in the story -- account of how The Frog Prince unfolded. This, together with a twinge of romance masterfully crafted into the story, made for a wonderful afternoon read. A perfect story to tell kids, a nice refresher for adults.
The story starts with how young Prince Gerit was turned into a frog by a witch and given a condition that he can only turn back into human if a princess would kiss him three times. And so the adventure starts for Gerit to travel to a neighboring kingdom, where he would find Princess Anneliese. Understandably, Princess Anneliese was appalled with the thought of having to kiss a frog, much less three times. But the initial hate and disgust gradually turned into an unlikely friendship. The only question now is how will the story end. All I can say without revealing too much is that all the loose ends were tied together and you couldn't have asked for a better ending.
The story does give a moral lesson on keeping promises. However I wouldn't entirely blame Prince Gerit for giving in to whatever the witch demanded in the face of a life and death situation. In any case, one way to look at it is perhaps turning into a frog turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the ordeal certainly made Gerit a stronger and more mature person. And besides without it, Gerit wouldn't have been able to meet princess Anneliese.
A definite 5 stars. I look forward to reading other fairy tale retellings by Mike Klaassen!
