DELETED SCENES

I've always enjoyed reading books by Tara Fox Hall. But reading extras and deleted scenes make the books even more worthwhile. I hope you enjoy these bonus scenes from Immortal Reckoning.

Alternate Ending for Immortal Reckoning

Author's Note:Initially, I wrote Immortal Reckoning as an origin story for the vampire protagonist Danial, the same way I wrote Immortal Confessions as the origin story for his brother, Devlin. Both brothers are key characters from the Promise Me Series, and appear in all seventeen previous books. Immortal Reckoning and Immortal Confessions came out so far apart because Devlin’s backstory was needed early in the series to give some explanation about the way he was (and his role switch from horrific villain in books 1-4 to possible love interest and protagonist in book 5). Danial was secretive throughout the series about his past, and I wanted to take time to explore his possible reasons for that. I wanted to re-examine the events of Immortal Confessions from his perspective, as well as fill in the many blanks in history left by his silence. This left me with an overly-long manuscript for Immortal Reckoning, which initially ended at the start of Promise Me, the first series book. I would have needed at least another two full chapters—and the book would have ended up as a tie in prequel to my series instead of a stand-alone story of reckoning and new beginnings. So the following final ending scene was cut, which occurs right before Promise Me begins...but about seventy years after the last events in Immortal Reckoning.
Later that night, with my new partner Theo in my guest room, and my blood donor on her way home, I settled in my favorite chair with a book to unwind. Instead, whispers of the past came to haunt me.
Lord Dalcon expects to be obeyed, my mother had said. Be careful, my son. He will not hesitate to take whatever he thinks is his, by whatever means he can. And his sons are the same as he.
I had taken that for the warning about my father and half-brothers she meant it as, years ago. But a more sinister double meaning was there, something I had ignored until now. I was Lord Dalcon’s son, too, and like my father, I had never hesitated to take something I believed mine. Not Anna, not Justine, not the natives I had become a god to, or the many I’d killed on the way to the bloody seat of power I held now.
The ends justify the means…and every life I touched was improved, or at the least, no worse off than if I had not interfered. The werefoxes that still served as my guards were protected, even as they protected me. Theo would be better off with me; after our chance meeting, he had proved himself a valuable ally, saving my life during my last job. In time, hopefully we will become friends. I’ve never known a werecougar, or had a partner, either. But Solution’s Inc. needs someone besides me working cases, if it’s to be successful. A new century is dawning. It’s time for change again.
You added killing for money to the list of sins tonight. Harder to rationalize murder.
Enough. No one the mob wanted dead was likely to be innocent. Besides, I was intelligent and crafty enough to find a way to save someone if by some chance a hit came across my desk that was for a truly good person.
For now, at least, I would not let it stand in my way.
***
I shifted, opening my eyes. Where was I? Someplace dark…And I’m holding someone!
I relaxed my grip immediately, letting the unconscious woman I’d been holding ease backward onto the bed. There was a large nasty looking half healed wound on her arm, and the taste of blood in my mouth.
My memory came flooding back in a rush. I’d been shot on a job. The arrow had been poisoned, and I’d dropped my cell. I’d driven off, but hadn’t made it home. I went off the road. Somehow…she not only found me, but also saved me.
I lay her back gently, and looked her over. She didn’t appear to be hurt beyond the blood loss and shock, but I wouldn’t be able to verify that until she awoke. Attempting to heal my bite wound with my saliva might kill her when it hit her already weakened system. I’d taken a lot of her blood, enough to make her out cold.
I cradled her to me gently, wondering who she was. Why did you help me?
“I’m sorry,” I whispered gently. “Thank you.”
She remained limp, only her steady heartbeat and even breathing stirring the silence.
I heard steps upstairs, and listened. But the sounds were animal noises, the heart beating very fast. Likely pets of substantial size, by the sound of their footsteps.
I thought about carrying her upstairs, but what if her pets attacked me? Better to stay here. Is it day?
My watch was missing, but hers was working. It is day. Better not to risk an open upstairs window.
I leg go of her, then reluctantly moved away. I’d bitten her from sheer need, and the experience likely hadn’t been a good one for her. If she found me holding her when she awoke, she might scream or faint.
I studied her, calculating what this all meant. She is cute, with good muscle tone. Casual clothes, for working in, not being admired. No smell of disease or drug use. Lovely long hair. Early thirties, possibly late twenties.
I got up and walked around, looking at my surroundings for clues. There were a number of plastic boxes in the basement, so I began opening them.
The first held DVDs and VCR tapes, most of them vampire popular fiction. I sighed. Not a good sign. Another vampire groupie.
The second held books, but they were too varied to let me draw any conclusions, except that she must have attended college, at least for a little while.
There was a whole rack of bakeware of all shapes and sizes. These she either inherited, or stopped using for some reason. All have a layer of dust on them.
A stack of wood, almost a cord, lay piled against the far wall. She must burn firewood. And likely cut it herself, as some of this wood is not good quality.
This wasn’t a rich woman. My surroundings were plain, if serviceable. There was nothing here that was costly, save some old mountain climbing equipment. Even that is well used.
I opened the last easily reached bin. Inside were pictures of the woman and a man. He was handsome, and they were beaming at the camera. In one, she was wearing a white dress, and he an old style gunslinger’s outfit. So she was married once, but isn’t now. Likely a divorce in these immoral times.
She stirred, letting out a sigh. I walked quickly back to the bed, and lay down, closing my eyes most of the way so as not to scare her.
She got up with effort, and made her way upstairs, giving me fearful looks. I wanted to help her, but stayed where I was.
I lay there for a while, thinking about my options. The honorable thing was to wait for her to return, to thank her. I smiled slightly, thinking perhaps she’d come back with a stake for me, or some garlic. It’s a good guess she won’t be back in a negligee, looking for a repeat performance.
Guilt suffused me for my ungratefulness. She saved my life and got nothing to show for it except some pain. No matter what happens, I’ll make sure I leave her with some money, or at least something to use to make the coming winter easier.
She was a strong one, too, to be able to walk away after I’d fed so heavily. Maybe she could be useful to me, become one of my donors? She already knows what I am, and has vampire fantasies, so it’s a good possibility. I’ll have to buy some of that Life Force potion from Tatiana and try it through dreams first. There’s no reason broaching blood donation if she doesn’t want my caresses.
I felt my body stir thinking of being in bed with her and rolled my eyes. But it’s been what, ten, fifteen years without any sex? Even longer without lovemaking.
Familiar despair washed through me, and I pushed it away wearily. Forget lovemaking, some good old-fashioned sex would be enough, especially since this woman has to have some skills, having been married once. There is always the vampire card I can bring into play. She’d taken off my shirt, and something told me that hadn’t just been to make sure I hadn’t been staked.
I closed my eyes. Enough thinking. I’d wait for dusk, and see what happened.

Excerpt

I woke at dusk, to men shouting. Flames were flickering in torches on the wall.
I ran toward the noise, coming face to face with Cerdan, in all his armor. “You bastard,” he said, baring his fangs and pointing his sword at me. “You have much to answer for.”
I didn’t reply, just braced for attack.
He circled me. “Hunters have attacked all over France. Easily a hundred werewolves are dead, and as many humans. Cannibal is missing, and presumed dead. Veronique is safe, but some of my best men are dead.”
“Leave now, or you will die, too.”
Cerdan lunged for me, and I evaded him, grabbing up a sword. He parried my thrust, then attacked in earnest. I defended myself, but he was older, and faster. He spitted me on the end of his sword in a few moments. With a shove, he pinned me to the oak door of the rectory. “I’ll bring your upper half back to James, so he can know you were faithful to death,” he said with an evil laugh, drawing his dagger. “A small comfort, to be sure.”
As he went to cut me, a dozen red furry forms launched at him, biting ferociously. He cut them to pieces, littering the ground with dying foxes as the bites rapidly healed up. But as he turned to deliver my killing blow, an arrow burst through his neck, the bloody head appearing under his chin. He staggered, but didn’t go down.
Charlise appeared, a bow in her hand. She stepped in front of me, and put another arrow through Cerdan’s right eye, then his left one. He cursed her, blinded, trying to pull them out. She turned to me and tugged at the end of the sword, freeing it. “Kill him,” she said, giving me the sword.

An Exclusive Interview with
Gregory Erich Phillips

I've had the pleasure of conducting a very inspiring interview with Mr. Phillips. Here's the complete interview.
  1. What was your inspiration in coming up with the plot of this story?

It started with the setting. From a fascination with the events surrounding World War One, as well as the immigrant experience in New York City in the early Twentieth Century, my first inspiration was the character of Elsa. As I began to develop the character, the plot then started to come into focus. Ultimately, Elsa, along with the other two major characters in the story, sort of directed the plot themselves.
  2. How long did it take you to write this book? What is the amount of research that went into writing it?

The whole project, from starting the novel to published book, took over fifteen years. The initial project took about two years, then after not finding a publisher, I let the book sit for a number of years while I worked on other projects. About five years ago I did a complete rewrite, and from there was able to get a publisher and now it’s out. So it’s been a long journey.

Regarding the research, looking back it was extensive, but I didn’t think of it as research at the time because I had so much fun with it. I love discovering things about history and culture, finding little treasures that I could slip into the book. It’s the little details, in a historical novel, that can really pull the reader into the setting.
  3. Have you always aspired to be an author? What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now?

I have always wanted to be an author. My father is a career novelist so you could say I wanted to follow in the family business. I wrote my first novel—a 150,000 word medieval epic—when I was 14. It was dreadful! I’ve been writing novels ever since and this is the first one that’s been published. I think the biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome, is simply keeping up with the swiftly changing landscape of publishing and reading, trying to write stories that will work with the way people find and consume stories today. It is much different than when I wrote that first novel.
  4. What’s your daily routine when you are writing a book?

I write best early in the morning. I find that my mind is most clear and my creative energy flows at that time of day. I work a pretty intense day job, which makes it hard for me to transition to writing at the end of a work day. I know a lot of writers who do their best work late at night. I do think it is important to establish a routine, especially for authors who have to balance another job and/or family commitments.
  5. What keeps you passionate about being an author and continuing to write books?

I am a storyteller. I have been since I was a child and I feel compelled to tell more stories. Once I have a character that inspires me, I can’t rest until I have the story down on the page. Fiction has a way of affecting people in a profound way. I think a writer can tell more about humanity through a story then through non-fiction, strange as that may sound. Look at the impact of To Kill a Mockingbird on the collective thought of the country. With my stories, I am passionate about showing something positive and loving about the human spirit, even in dark times and circumstances.
  6. If there is one thing you can tell readers on why they should pick up this book, what would it be?

Love of Finished Years is a historical novel, but it is incredibly timely. Much as I wanted to publish it years ago, I think that ultimately the timing for its release could not have been better. So many of the issues that shaped America in the 1910s mirror the things that are shaping our country and our world today. Those were difficult times, but this is a story about friendship and love, which we need now more than ever.

New Release with $10 Giveaway: Unconditional Surrender by Gina Danna

NEW BOOK RELEASE

Unconditional Surrender Tour Graphic
UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER
Gina Danna
Series: Hearts Touched by Fire Book 2
Genre: Historical Romance, Historical Fiction, Victorian Romance, Civil War
Publisher: To The Bitter End Publishing
Publication Date: September 4, 2017
She's the best Union spy and he is a Confederate officer, thrown together during a war where love stands little chance of winning, except by an unconditional surrender….
Unconditional Surrender
Confederate Major Charles Silvers has had enough war. After two years of fighting, his view of a glorious Southern victory over the North has lost its luster and been replaced by a burning desire to return home to Virginia and life as it used to be, before the war. When he meets Sarah Lawrence during the siege on Vicksburg, Mississippi, he is convinced the blond-haired beauty could fill the void in his life—but what he does not know is that this Southern belle isn't what she appears to be…
Tortured by memories of the night in 1860 when masked bushwackers torched her Mississippi home and killed her father, Sarah escaped the South. Now, however, she's back and seeking revenge. As one of the best spies in the Union Army, she's in a unique position to get her wish. For her, a Confederate Major, even a devastatingly handsome one, is just the tool to obtain the information the Union needs—even at the cost of her heart.
Loved this book! The plot offers the perfect conflict between Southern folk--one, the heroine, who is fighting on behalf of the Union, and the hero, who's an officer in the Confederate Army.

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at Unconditional Surrender. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.
Charles wiped his lips with the linen napkin, placing it on the table as he pushed his chair back. "The meal was greatly appreciated. But, if you'll excuse us, we do have to continue." He held his hand out to Sarah.
As she placed her hand in his and rose, she saw through the window behind him the pinking sky outside. Sunset. A lump formed in her throat, one she desperately tried to swallow as ice raced down her spine.
Night was coming, and all the demons would be loose.
"Major, please." Kavanaugh sat back in his chair. "To take a lady into the hazards of the night in this area is not a good choice. I invite you to stay here. There are more than enough bedrooms upstairs, and we will catch up with the general tomorrow, I am sure."
Charles's grip tightened. "While we appreciate the offer, I believe we must move on. I must get my darling wife to safety."
This time, the Irishman stood. "All the more reason to stay. We are safe here. My man Bentley will keep an eye out for any mischief. And I assure you, General Johnston will arrive."
"How can you be so sure, sir?" Charles challenged.
With that, all fear of the growing darkness dissipated. Sarah wanted to know as well.
"I have received word. He will meet us tomorrow."
As a spy, opportunity here blossomed with each hour. Her mind raced. One thing was certain: she needed more information, but she remained firmly quiet, like a good Southern belle. Ladies were not supposed to be versed in politics or the war. Many she knew had more knowledge than men ever gave them credit for.
Charles frowned. "Sir, General Johnston is very high in command. I fail to see how he could take time from the war to ride here for a meeting with a foreign visiting politician." He was gripping the back of the chair, his knuckles turning white. "If you wanted to view the workings of this conflict, why are you not with General Pemberton at Vicksburg? Or General Forrest, or Lee, or a multitude of others? Why here, in Mississippi?"
The politeness that had cloaked the evening came to an icy halt with the anger in Charles's voice. His demeanor took on the edge of civility mixed with the animosity of frustration and futility.
Kavanaugh, though, did not react right away, aside from sitting straighter and toying absently with his cuffs.
"Major, I am well aware that you've been a loyal soldier to your cause. Your country can be proud to have you as her defender. Yet strong will and abilities, at this point, are not the winners. The Confederacy needs help, needs recognition by the queen of England and the rest of Europe. Other methods must be taken to pursue the win and gain the long-term right to be a nation." He scooted his chair back. "Come, let me show you why I know your general will make it here."

An Excerpt from the Book

Take an inside look at The Darkest Loop. Read this sizzling excerpt from the book.
It was the fourth September 10th, 2001 we had spent in New York City. And each of those Mondays discouraged us even more. Hanging around the World Trade Center for a month (real time) got us no closer to the unfettered access we needed. The possibility of being stuck in this ruthless rut forever was starting to weigh heavily on my soul.
"What’s wrong?" Thena asked.
We were standing on the Observation Deck of the South Tower and I hadn’t said a word since we got there. And now, I was looking over the edge of the railing like I might just jump over it. Wouldn’t do me any good, though, considering there was a jumper’s net not far below. And even if there wasn’t, a fall from 110 stories wouldn’t do me any harm. I’d hit the ground then wake up on September 3rd, 2001 remembering absolutely nothing.
"What’s wrong," she asked again. "Is it the dream?"
"Look, it wasn’t a wet one if that’s what you’re thinking. It was actually more like a nightmare."
"But one in which you kept screaming out Zoe’s name."
In my dream, my mother was attacking my father and his girlfriends. A bloody foursome of sorts. Only it was just my mother’s body. But the head belonged to my ex-girlfriend, Zoe. She had a crazed look in her eyes. I watched as she stabbed my father over and over again. And then, as he lay there in a pool of his own blood, she took a Phillips head screwdriver and slowly, sinfully twisted it right-left-right, into my father’s temple. He screamed but the screams were my voice. Begging for Zoe to stop.
"The dream was nothing," I said. "And everything is cool." The lie was better than the truth. The truth is I was coming unglued. Destabilized by this loop which faithfully kept twirling us round and round. I was a moon trapped in its orbit. And its gravity was slowly tearing me apart.

In ancient Éire, men and women take to the legends for answers. Different-colored eyes are the mark of a Seer, it is said, and those who can see the future are in league with the devil. They cannot be suffered to live.
He wishes to prove himself…
Marcán of Clonascara bears the bloodline of Brian Boru, the legendary high king, and his prowess as a warrior has earned him great respect. But he was born with different-colored eyes, and there are some who would have him suffer a Seer's fate. His fiercest adversary is Beibhinn, mother to Diarmuid, his close friend and king, and Astrid, the woman who holds his heart. If Astrid ever showed him any interest, he would fight Beibhinn and any army to wed her.
She is desperate to escape…
Astrid is sick of her mother's belittling, but her brother is in no hurry to see her married, so she decides to see to her own match-making. The man she approaches quickly reveals his lack of honor, but her overbearing mother pushes her to wed him anyway. When Astrid discovers Marcán's love for her, she realizes that what she wants has been in front of her all along. True happiness awaits them, but only if they can put a stop to her mother's plans.
Ms. York carried this book forward with lots of suspense and no shortage of her depraved antagonists looking to fulfill their own agendas. Eyes of the Seer is storytelling at its best presenting a top-notch read!

"Astrid?" Marcán kept his tone low and controlled. "What d'ye here?"
The men stood, appearing surprised, ripped out of their lustful thoughts. That confusion swiftly changed to discomfort when they caught sight of Marcán's expression. They moved away from her, opening the circle and allowing him a direct view of her, still seated beside Pádraig.
Her hair was tousled and her eyes were widely innocent. She dipped her head, eyeing the men from beneath her lashes.
"Nothing." Her voice held a husky tone. "We are… talking."
The men turned back to him and waited. Could they actually have any expectation of his consent? Mayhap in the Meic Murchadha clan. Marcán slowly gazed at each man in turn, looking him right in the eye, before finally settling his gaze again on Astrid.
"Do they all know ye are Diarmuid's little sister?"
Each man took a step back. All but Pádraig, whose face maintained a look of superiority, his hand still on her shoulder like he owned her.
Marcán moved closer to Astrid, and the other men continued to yield, stepping even farther away. "Pádraig."
"I thought ye were telling yer stories, Marcán," Pádraig said.
Marcán looked at his hand on Astrid's shoulder. And waited. Time slipped by. One of the other men coughed, and Pádraig finally removed his hand. Heaving a deep sigh, he moved to stand with the others. Marcán refused to acknowledge Astrid's crestfallen expression when he extended his hand to her.
"And I thought ye would keep to yer own women rather than taking advantage of an innocent lass." Marcán handed the man his fur.
"This lovely lass asked me to show her the hot springs."
When Marcán looked again at Astrid, he had hoped for some show of guilt. Instead, he was met with a defiant glare.
"Oh did she?" Marcán asked as he shifted his gaze to the other men. "Were ye afraid ye'd lose yer way on yer own?"
Pádraig offered a small smile. "If the lass wishes for the men to join us, they are more than willing, and I do not object."
The man was speaking of accepting the offer he'd believed she was making. Marcán tasted blood where he'd bitten his cheek to hold back his angry words. Rather than speak to Pádraig, whom he was tempted to strike, he turned to Astrid. "Did ye wish for more from these men than seeing the hot springs?"
Her eyes were angry, and her shoulders had rounded to their natural bend. Relieved to see her drop the flirtatious facade, he smiled. Just in time, he noticed the flash of anger and realized his smile had been misinterpreted. She thought he was laughing at her. He caught her hand just before it made contact with his cheek.
"How dare ye!" Astrid said, letting loose her tirade.
Though striking another was a punishable offense, Marcán was more than willing to stand there and let her have at him. She did not care for him, but her behavior—willfulness… stubbornness… whatever Diarmuid wanted to label her rants—was merely an indication of the great depth of her passion. Marcán recognized it because he was the same way. Mayhap that was what drew him to her. That he would not be the one to guide her to that knowledge was like a knife to his gut.
His tone hardened. "I dare because I am here to protect ye."
She ripped her hand out of his grasp and stopped just short of stomping her injured foot. Her voice shrill, she said, "I do not want ye to protect me! I want nothing of ye!"
Eyes of the Seer by Ashley York is yet another mesmerizing hit by this author. EYES OF THE SEER will have you turning pages.
