Book Review with $10 Giveaway: Western Song by Leigh Podgorski
My Review
Definitely Not Your Typical Western Story!
The story opens with a mysterious young woman traveling to a place unknown to her, and immediately I was caught. Who is she? Where is she going? The author did a good job starting the story this way as it piqued my interest and compelled me to read onward. Then, the story brought us to Weston and the tragedy he experienced, and my heart bled for him and for his friends. In times like this, it's good to have family and friends around for support, and I really enjoyed reading about this tight-knit community.
The setting is in a small town. But even then, racism is alive; rather, it has always been there, but it was only recently that Weston knew of it, and I love how he reacted to it. I'm not sure if there was any closure to this issue that the author seems to be exploring, and perhaps not, but we did get to see how Weston dealt with it.
I have to admit I glossed over some of the narratives; I love dialogue and plenty of white spaces in my books, so I skipped to those, and I'm happy to say that I didn't miss anything. Perhaps some back story, but definitely nothing that marred my enjoyment and understanding of this story.
The story was written from multiple points of view, and this affords us a more in-depth look at the events in the story. I do wish though that we could have more from the heroine's point of view and her thoughts and feelings about the various situations she encountered over the course of the story.
All in all, this book has provided a refreshingly new viewpoint of a Western story. Leigh is a wonderful author, and definitely is a book worth checking out!
