The three friends soon emerged from the piney woods and paused at a rock outcropping near a bend in the trail. Jane’s chest expanded as she took in a deep breath of the crisp mountain air. “Someone lives over there.” She shielded her eyes with one hand and pointed with the other across the narrow box canyon to a log cabin nestled in a fluttering aspen grove.

Smoke puffed in white clouds out of the short chimney stack and sailed to the east. A lone man with a German Shepherd lumbered out the door.

She waved both arms above her head in greeting, but the man was staring the other way, down into the short ravine.

“What’s he looking at?” Jane’s gaze fell to the bottom of the gully just a few more steps down the path. Next to the shallow, winding creek, an amphitheater with rows of gray, splintered wooden benches encircled a smoldering fire pit.

That’s when she saw the campground host lying with his head near the pit and his legs crumpled underneath his body.

Jane’s heart went into her throat as she screamed out, “Are you okay?” and raced down the steep trail with her friends on her heels.

She came up sharp. Libby drew in an audible breath and Wes mumbled, “What the heck?”

Dark red blood stained the man’s light jacket and pooled out from under his back. Several large animal prints were tracked in the blood.

"I know a lot about magic, darlin'. I know who likes black magic and who does only good magic." That was a truth stretch. He only knew when someone killed, thanks to the visions. When close to a person who used magic, he could usually detect what kind they'd practiced most recently. From her, though, he couldn't tell anything, probably because his balls were in a wad.

"I think you like the hint of badness that comes from being a called a witch." He waited, hoping she'd fill him in on how much badness was black magic and how much was sexy wickedness. The latter he could handle and would be a willing participant. Her using evil magic, maybe not a death ritual yet, but still, the darker side of magic, he didn't want to hear.

"So, you're the Santa Claus of the magic world with a naughty-and- nice list?"

"This Santa kills those on the naughty list and doesn't bring gifts to those who behave. Which list do you think you're on?"

She glared, but didn't answer. "You kill people like necromancers? They always use death energy for power."

He wanted to hit his head on the steering wheel. Would she just answer the question? "Sometimes. They don't always need a death ritual, though."

"I guess it makes sense there'd be someone out there designated to keep this in check. I haven't run across very many truly evil magical people. Sounds like a dangerous job. How do you find them?"

He shrugged.

"Why am I not on your kill list if you think I'm a bad witch?"

His heart hammered his ribs to the point of pain. Best to just throw it out there. "Do you and the other six Pleiades witches do evil things that put people at risk or kill people?"

She frowned and shook her head. "We try not to get noticed. Hurting people would definitely get us noticed. However, one of us is an ex- MI6 agent who still goes after the lowest of the low in society. Guess that counts."

She hadn't said she wouldn't do it at some point in the future, but at least she hadn't misused magic yet. His shoulder muscles loosened. "I'm sure you could be a wicked witch..."

Her cheeks flushed and she muttered, "Wouldn't you like to know."

Yeah, he would.

Shae inhaled deeply, counted to ten, and prayed a madman hadn't abducted her.

He remained hunkered down in front of her, eyes cool, his powerful forearms braced on his muscular, leather-clad thighs. Small scars marred his tanned fingers he kept loosely clasped in front of him. He wore a wide, corded leather band on one thick wrist and several narrow ones on his other. His black t-shirt stretched across his broad shoulders like a second skin, the short sleeves revealing bulging biceps. On his left one, he sported a sword-like tattoo made up of a myriad of intricate designs. It was unusual, like nothing she'd ever seen.

With those clothes and his long, ropey hair, he dressed like an extra from a movie shoot or something.

"You can't keep me here," she tried to reason with him. "You have to let me go. My uncle will be frantic and calling the cops by now."

"Not until you answer my questions. Those dead men?"

She scowled, all thoughts of being calm and rational flying out the window. He'd accosted her outside the club, kidnapped her, and now he expected her to answer his damn questions? "Just what the hell are you talking about? What dead men?"

Sure, he was infuriatingly good-looking, but then so was Ted Bundy.

At the thought of the serial killer who'd charmed and murdered several college girls, Shae sprang to her feet and bulleted for the door. He grabbed her around the waist. Crap, she'd forgotten how fast he could move.

"Lemme go!" She hit him, but he merely swept her into his arms like she was some delicate freakin' daisy and carried her back. Furious, she bit him. Hard. And hoped her teeth did some real damage to his biceps.

An annoyed grunt escaped him. "Stop that, you little hellcat."

Like a bag of unwanted grain, he dropped her on her butt, back on the mat again.

Pain jarred up her spine, and she clenched her teeth. But the three angry, red streaks scored on his powerful forearm had her blinking.

She'd done that? Shocked to her core at her dreadful behavior, Shae opened her mouth to apologize but when she met those burning yellow eyes that had taken on hints of orange, a spurt of anger cut through her guilt. "This is kidnapping. I'm gonna have your barbaric ass thrown in jail!"

"Try. When you're ready to talk, scream. Maybe I'll hear you, maybe I won't." His eyes like flint, he stalked out, shutting the door quietly behind him, only to stride back inside. He crossed to the far end of the room, grabbed all the swords from the stand there, and walked out again. Leaving behind a small fridge. Right then, she wanted to fling the appliance at his arrogant head. Except he looked like he could break her neck with just one hand.

She had to get out of here before he came back.

The storyline is solid, tense, and well thought out. I was pulled in immediately, before I finished the first page, and the book held my interest all the way through, without letting up a single time. Absolute Surrender is a good, solid story, the kind you can sink your teeth into--one you'll want to keep on your shelf and come back to visit again and again.

"I have nothing. No husband. No friends. No life. Nothing. I might as well be dead!"

Through a veil of tears, I stared at the wilting rubber plant in the corner and tried to pretend I was anywhere but there. I don't think I could have been any more mortified. I sounded like a hack Shakespearean actor.

Crossing her arms over her matronly bosom, Margarita pushed a fresh box of tissues toward me before settling back in her chair. She didn't appear the least bit put out by my hysterics and I wondered what it would take to get some kind of reaction from her. Talk about detached. Fifty minutes into our first session and she hadn't even opened her mouth to impart any words of life-altering wisdom? For all I knew, she could be compiling her week's menus and their subsequent shopping list in her head. Was it possible my father had stumbled across the only deaf-mute therapist in the country?

"Therapy. I still can't believe I'm here," I mumbled tearfully. Had I not been so totally consumed by my own misery, I would have been burning up with shame. "Who goes to therapy, anyway?" I cried, ignoring the frown appearing on Margarita's face. "I'll tell you who—celebrities, bored middle-aged housewives, people who've taken to curling up in corners and sucking their thumbs. Total nutters, that's who! Not me."

This had to be a mistake. I didn't belong there. I didn't want to belong there. I wanted to have my life back. But the very act of coming to therapy was in itself an admission I had failed at being a grown-up and was in need of rescuing.

On the drive there, I'd made a promise to myself not to get all caught up in that whole touchy-feely crap. Sure, I might have been led dazed and blinking from the dark recesses of my room?and my mind for that matter?clutching a ratty old stuffed rabbit, my normally well-behaved shoulder-length mousy-brown hair long gone wild and my usually striking blue eyes dulled and barely recognizable. But make no mistake, I was there for one reason and one reason only, and that was to get Dad off my back and, in the process, prove to him what a complete waste of everyone's time and money this was. Alas, once I'd settled into that arse-numbing chair?no sign of a comfy leather couch, much to my disappointment?the silence, combined with the sympathy emanating from every pore of Margarita's round face, had triggered something in my brain—the blabbing switch. Before I could stop it, my runaway mouth had embarked on a journey of its own, climaxing in my recent outburst, still hovering in the air between us like a bad smell no one wants to acknowledge.

God, what have I done? Unfortunately, I couldn't take it all back now. I looked expectantly across to the Beige Linen Oracle—as she was from that moment christened—for any sign she'd come up with the magical solution for my ruined life. I'd done my bit. Surely it was up to her now to sort out this mess? But no, she merely stared back expectantly.

Waiting for exactly what, I wondered? A complete mental breakdown? By this time, I was little alarmed. Am I a lost cause? Maybe I really was losing my mind. Great, this is all I need. If it wasn't bad enough to be a twenty-six-year-old recently discarded wife, on top of that I was doomed to suffer the additional humiliation of losing the plot, going la-la, floundering in the emotional cesspool of life without a float.
