An Interview with Errin Stevens, Author of Updrift

An Interview with Errin Stevens

I am pleased to share my recent interview with the talented Errin Stevens on her thoughts when writing her novel, Updrift.
1. Please tell us something unique about you that readers don’t know about.
Don’t turn me in for counseling on this, but I used to see guardian angels. It’s been a while, so maybe they’ve given up on me, but growing up – all through high school – I would regularly perceive a tall (we’re talking 7-8 feet), fearsome and imposing presence, not always the same one, standing watch just inside the door of my bedroom at night. I loved how powerful they seemed to me.
2. That's very interesting indeed. What’s your favorite part of writing paranormal stories?
Letting my imagination run free, thinking about all the delicious ‘what-ifs’ and explicating the ones I select for inclusion to my satisfaction. It is a singular, personal pleasure for me.
3. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned while researching this series?
The number of people who have an affinity for mermaid mythology is staggering. So many of us are fascinated with the ocean and its lore… the draw is much more universal than I expected.
4. What is one characteristic of your hero that would endear him to the readers?
Gabe rebels against his loyal nature, but in the end, he always chooses duty over personal fulfillment. He’s driven to protect those he loves.
5. What about your heroine? Why would readers sympathize with her?
Kate doesn’t have it in her to let selfishness win, either. She does the hardest, most frustrating thing if it means supporting her family and friends.
6. What’s up next in The Mer Chronicles?
“Breakwater” is just out (I give readers a sneak preview at the end of “Updrift”); and I’m wrestling with “Outrush” as we speak, a section of which is included at the end of “Breakwater”. I’m dreaming about a fourth, which is a bad sign, ‘cause that means I’ll have to write the dang thing out at some point!
Thank you for granting me this interview, and much success to your books!

What if joining your lover's world meant leaving your own?
Kate will have to look hard at her man to determine what is real, what is illusion, and how, if ever, she can get back home.
Ever since her father died, Kate Sweeting’s home life has been in the pits, her well being on life support. Her future looks desolate, too, until she and her mother make another plan: abandon their shriveled existence for more promising prospects on the coast, where Mom can play small-town librarian/bachelorette, and Kate can figure out what’s up with that secretive Blake family from the beach.
Everyone is eerily captivated with Kate and her mother, and Cara is the first to figure out why when the man of her dreams arrives all dripping and devoted and closed-mouthed about what he intends. Kate is willing to go along with their subterfuge for a while, but eventually makes a charge for the water to learn what her mother is hiding. Gabe Blake is there waiting for her… and so is someone considerably less friendly. By the time Kate navigates her way home, everything will have changed for her – what she feels, what she wants, and what she will risk to be with the man she loves.
